Au pair USA Feedback
Greetings from USA!
I´ve been to USA as an Au pair for 3,5 months already. The time has just flown by. I´m going to tell you how I´ve been here and what I have done. I didn´t choose the state but I was hoping to go somewhere near California or Florida. In the end it all depends on the family you match with. So you never know where you end up living at.
I live on Ohio. It´s a little city called Beavercreek. The population of this city in 2016 was 45 193 people. The capital city of Ohio is Columbus which is about one hour drive from where I live. I´ve been there few times now – I visited the zoo and discovered the city. In 3,5 months I´ve been to Arizona, Cincinnati, Dayton, Connecticut and few other cities. But there is still so much to discover. Obviously I don´t have time to visit every city but I have chosen some destinations where I wish to go.
My host family has 3 kids. A 12 year old girl and two year old twins. I only babysit the twins, boy and girl. The parents wish to teach their kids two languages – English and Arabian. I speak English with the kids and parents speak both English and Arabian. The children got used to me in just few days and at first they called me „Vauva“ (Laura). Now they already say „Laula“. If I went there they could only speak about 10 words, I have taught them a lot and now they know at least 70+ words in English and 40+ words in Arabian.
The twins are very sweet and stick together. They are fast, diligent and clever. I´ve been getting to know them and I know how to react in different situations. It´s very important to constantly communicate with them and show different objects and animals and tell them what it is. I also need to explain them how it is appropriate to act in different situations. Why it´s not allowed to hit others and how it may make others feel afterwards. I guess the most difficult part was to make the children listen to me. I can say they weren´t very difficult with me although I was a new person for them. So it took a while for us to understand each other. The most important thing for the kids is their schedule. Children need routine, so that they know what´s coming ahead and everything will go smoothly.
My working hours are Monday to Friday 7.00-17.00 and the weekends are off. During the weekends I can do whatever I want to and also during the week when I´m finished with my work. I often go to the gym to get away from the host family´s house for a while, gather my thoughts and meet new people.
In September I will start with English courses, which is free of charge for me and definitely very useful since one of the reasons why I came to America was to improve my English skills.
All people here are friendly but you never know what they actually think about you. Acquaintances can be found easily here. There are 15 Au pairs near me and from time to time we go to the cinema, camping or visit amusement parks and other social events together. I´ve also found some good friends who I can rely on and visit.
During my stay here I´ve had 3 weeks of vacation. The family had planned their vacation before I came and their destination point was Jordania but I wanted to spend my vacation in America. So I spent my vacation in Arizona. During that time I managed to celebrate my birthday. In Arizona I visited the Grand Canyon. The sight was unbelievable and my mouth just dropped. I never thought I would see this in real life. I don´t even know how to describe it – you need to go see it yourself.
I had never before been outside in 46 degrees but that´s what I experienced in Arizona. Since the weather was so hot people were cooking eggs on their cars and posted pictures of it on social media. Some people were driving with cooking gloves on their hands because the steering wheel was too hot to touch.
In conclusion I am happy that I came to America to be an Au pair. In such a little time I´ve seen and done so much but I´m sure that even bigger adventures are yet to come.
