History and Locations

The University of Bedfordshire was established in August 2006 by order of the Privy Council, following the merger between the University of Luton and De Montfort University’s Bedford campus.

The University consists of four main campuses

  • Luton campus - the University's main campus is located right in the heart of Luton town centre
  • Bedford campus - is located in Polhill Avenue, Bedford
  • Putteridge Bury campus - is the home of our postgraduate courses and conference centre, and is located on the outskirts of Luton
  • Buckinghamshire campus - is located in the nearby town of Aylesbury

Nursing and Midwifery students

The University has two Hospital sites:

  • The Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury which is approximately 40 minutes from central Luton
  • The Wycombe Hospital in High Wycombe which is approximately 50 minutes from central Luton

Award Winning University

  • Athena SWAN Charter Bronze Award 2008

The Athena SWAN Charter (launched in June 2005) is a scheme which recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology (SET) in higher education and research.

  • MBE Honour for University 2008

The Queen awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List to Arti Kumar at the University of Bedfordshire in recognition of her services to higher education.

  • National Teaching Award 2007

A lecturer from the University of Bedfordshire was awarded a prestigious national teaching award worth £10,000 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to teaching and learning in the higher education sector.

  • CIPR PRide Awards 2011
  • The University of Bedfordshire picked up a Silver Award at the 2011 CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) PRide awards. It was awarded the Silver for 'Best use of Social Media' for it's recent campaigns aimed at staff and students.
